The vineyard gazebo situated in a public park close to the city center was built between 1871 and 1888 according to the architectural design of Antonín Barvitius and Josef Schulz as a part of the summer residence of the industrialist Moritz Gröbe.
The commision was to design a general structural reconstruction of the old gazebo ruin as well as an annex to the gazebo allowing for a year-round operation of a café and a wine-cellar. The required extension of the interior space was situated into the slope under ground in order not to alter either the original ground-plan or the silhouette of the gazebo. The result is a cluster of subterranean spaces that are connected to each other solely by their entrances. These new spaces reach the ground in a sufficient distance from Barvitius´s gazebo and therefore do not interfere with it.
Fragments of the original wooden components were carefully documented and new components were produced for a complete replica of Barvitius´s wooden structure.
The interior space and facilities are conceived as autonomous from the gazebo replica and they are designed in a contemporary way. The original interior of the former vineyard caretaker´s apartment in the basement of the gazebo has not been preserved. Interior spaces and furnishing are white.
